UPDATE 10:42 a.m. Monday, Oct. 29, 2018 - The Butte County Coroner has released the identity of the victim in a deadly crash on Highway 99 as Jesseca Higashi, 42, of Chico.

CHICO, Calif.- A woman died on Highway 99 last night after drifting off the road and crashing into a power pole.

The crash happened around 7 p.m. about eight miles north of Chico near the intersection of Highway 99 and Anita Road.

When police arrived on scene they saw a white Toyota Tacoma pickup with major damage, off the roadway in a dirt field. A PG&E power pole had been snapped in half with a live power line lying in the northbound traffic lane of the 99. The female driver was found dead. She was the only one in the vehicle. CHP does not believe that alcohol or drugs were involved. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

The north and southbound lanes of the 99 were both shut down for approximately two hours while PG&E removed the powerline from the freeway.
