TRINITY COUNTY, Calif. - One teenager has died after she crashed head-on into a pickup on Highway 299 in the Douglas City area, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The department says around 9 a.m. on Aug. 10, the 15-year-old was driving her pickup eastbound on Highway 299, just west of the Indian Creek Lodge. According to the CHP, she was driving in the westbound lane, passing multiple vehicles and speeding to do so.
One man driving a pickup in the westbound lane was approaching the Modoc County teenager as she was passing a semi-truck. The CHP says the teenager collided with the man in the pickup, causing her own pickup to be thrown, hitting the backside of the semi-truck's trailer.
Both pickups landed and rested in the westbound lane of Highway 299, leading to a closure of the highway for a little over an hour.
The CHP says the teenager was wearing a seatbelt, but still sustained fatal injuries. The man in the pickup was treated for minor injuries and the semi-truck driver was uninjured.
As the department continues to investigate, they say it is unknown whether alcohol or drugs were a factor.
