BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. - With more water recreational areas reopening, deputies from the Butte County Sheriff Marine Unit are advising people to stay safe when heading out with the boat.

First - have a coast guard approved life vest for each passenger on board the boat.

Second - if you plan to drink don't get behind the wheel.

Third - make sure your boat has its current registration.

"Your tag should be a yellow 2021 tag. Right now with DMVs being closed we are making exceptions for people that need in-person transactions to be completed at DMV. However you can still complete basic registration renewal online," said Deputy John Barber.

Fire extinguishers are also a good idea to have on board in case of an emergency.

Deputies warn don't litter when on your boat you could pay up to a thousand dollar fine if caught.
