BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. - Reduced enrollment has Butte College cutting classes and laying off instructors.

Vice President of Instruction and Chief Instructional Officer Virginia Guleff issued a statement to Action News Now saying the community college has been experiencing low enrollments since the Camp Fire hit in the fall of 2018.

She said the community college experienced a further decline due to Covid-19.

Guleff said the college must be fiscally responsible to ensure stability, and that collective bargaining agreements are being followed. She also told Linda Watkins-Bennett of Action News Now that the College is making these cuts now, even though the Chancellor's Office placed Butte Collee in a 'hold harmless' status since the Camp Fire.

Guleff said there are still plenty of classes available for the spring semester.
