BURNEY, Calif. - Fall River Joint Unified School District office went into lockdown and buses were diverted from the school after reports of gunshots in Burney on Tuesday morning, Shasta County Sheriff said.
The Burney Enforcement Division responded to the area of Woods Ave. and Pine St. where gunshots were reported.
Deputies said Kyle Daniels Christie, 33-year-old from Burney, was identified as the suspect. Christie was a known felon and had an active arrest warrant for assault with a deadly weapon and elder abuse.
Within minutes, deputies arrived and began searching for Christie and an unknown female who was with Christie, later determined to be Katarina Castillo Richey, 28.
Deputies received reports that Christie was at the Pit River Health Clinic in Burney and where he assaulted a male, pointing a firearm at him.
Upon arriving at the clinic, deputies got information Christie was behind the Pit River Casino where the deputies located him and Richey.
The two then attempted to cross Burney Creek behind the casino when deputies could see Christie was armed with a shotgun.
After several minutes of commands to drop the firearm, Christie threw the shotgun into the bushes and deputies were able to arrest Christie.
Richey attempted to run off while deputies confronted Christie. She was caught by a deputy.
Christie was booked into the Shasta County Jail for numerous violations including violations in December of 2020.
Richey was also booked into the Shasta County Jail for numerous violations.
