Redding, Calif. – A break-in happened at the Black Bear Diner and a thief is making off with almost a thousand dollars.
Police are investigating what happened after the general manager came in early on Monday and found parts of the ceiling scattered on the floor and a gaping hole in the roof.
“I think we were more so dumbfounded that it had happened, that somebody put the effort in to climb our roof and cut holes in the ceiling,” said Charity Smith, a shift lead the Black Bear Diner.
The Black Bear Diner remained open for business, even after someone stole its security cameras and $750. Employees say the theft feels personal.
“It's more of a hurt on us,” said Smith. “We work hard for our money and when you’re stealing from our business you're stealing from each employee.”
But it could have been worse.
“It’s a relief to know that just petty cash was stolen and not all of our big bank deposits from the weekend,” said Smith.
Customers tell Action News Now they wanted to show their support
“I heard about it today,” said regular customer Martin Flack. “I came right in to eat because it's such a wonderful atmosphere and the food's good.”
But many say this happens too much
“I'm sorry for their loss,” said Flack. “They're warning people and we have to watch out for that kind of stuff here in Redding.”
The Black Bear Diner’s been at its spot for about 25 years and this is the first time its been burglarized. The diner says it plans to beef up security around their restaurant.
Investigators say they do have a lead and a suspect.
