**REMINDER: These are the unofficial results from the midterm elections. All official results must be certified by the Secretary of State.
The election is on Nov. 6 and Action News Now is providing a breakdown for Propositions so that you can be prepared to vote in the 2018 Midterm Elections.
Prop 12 - What is it about?
Proposition 12 has to do with exactly what happens to animals in farms mainly egg-laying hens, breeding pigs and calves raised for veal.
If prop 12 passes there would be would be new minimum requirements on farmers to provide more space for these animals. It also would prohibit the sale of meat and egg products from animals confined in a noncomplying manner.
In 2008 Californians passed prop 2 which basically did the exact same thing but didn’t put exact square footage requirements for the law.
The new law would increase space requirements from 8 tenths of a square foot to a whole square foot for egg-laying hens by 2020 and then change to cage-free housing by 2022.
Interestingly both those for and against prop 12 are animal rights activist groups those for saying that it is a step in the right direction for our animals and those against say the proposition doesn’t go nearly far enough in its pursuit of animal rights.
What does my vote mean?
YES: would pass these new restrictions on farmers and increase regulations
NO: regulations under California law will remain the same
