Missing Chico kayaker found in Feather River

The search started after two men went kayaking down Feather River, lost control and overturned. One made it to shore, the other did not. Crews recovered the body on Sunday.

GRIDLEY, Calif. - The body of a missing kayaker in Chico was found Sunday in Feather River.

The search started after two men went kayaking down Feather River, lost control and overturned Saturday, Aug. 31. One man made it safely to shore, and he reported his friend continued floating down the river and he lost sight of him.

The Butte County Sheriff’s Office Search and the Marine Unit, a chopper, and Search and Rescue Teams searched Feather River for several hours and could not locate the man.

Crews continued an extensive search and on Sunday, Sept 1 at approximately 11:15 a.m. the body of the man, 40-year-old Omar Espinal of Chico was recovered from Feather River north of East Gridley Road.

Officers said the investigation into the death is ongoing.
