CHICO, Calif. - A black bear was sighted in south Chico early Sunday morning, causing a quick response from the Chico Police Department and the Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Chico police say a man called about a bear near Lowes Home Improvement at 2350 Forest Ave, and during the encounter, the bear was somewhat frightened by the witness’ car and ran off to Les Schwab’s at Notre Dame Boulevard.

The bear then climbed up a sycamore tree where it remained for five hours.

Chico police called the Department of Fish and Wildlife 30 minutes after the call came in at midnight Sunday.

At around 5:30 a.m., the bear finally climbed down the tree and ran off towards Notre Dame Boulevard and towards a field at Bruce Road, where it escaped unharmed.

Nobody was injured during the bear encounter including the bear, but authorities do advise residents that if they see a bear to not approach them and to call 911 immediately.

It's been mostly sunny over the valley with a few more clouds over the mountains, and that translated to an overall beautiful Thursday for northern California. We'll have fewer clouds tonight, and a warming trend begins on Friday.
