CHICO, Calif. – A little more color is flooding the streets of Chico.
Birdhouses are growing across one fence in a Chico neighborhood. It’s now an avian attraction in the city.
What started as a family bonding project now has turned into a community movement, Jodie and Bruce Dillman shared with Action News Now, there are about 75 birdhouses lining the fence of W Sacramento Avenue to welcome everyone who passes by.
“I think it brings unity, that we come together and we’re focusing on something that makes us happy,” shared Jodie Dillman.
Birdhouse after birdhouse nested along W Sacramento Avenue, just west of 8th Avenue.
“The one that we're most proud of are the ones of businesses in Chico,” said Bruce Dillman. “We got to idea to do the pageant, the blue room, and collier and it snowballed from there.”
Jodie and Bruce Dillman started building and painting birdhouses with their grandchildren a little over a year ago.
“I especially like to see young families with their kids on their bikes, or with their strollers and it’s really cute to hear the kids say ‘I like this one, I like that one,” shared Bruce.
Little did the Dillman's know, they were going to start a trend.
“Especially when everyone was sheltering, lots of them started popping up,” said Jodie. “We saw that somebody else has done it, we saw that they had an infinity for this too, it feels really good, even though we don’t know these neighbors.”
Mike Murphy told Action News Now that the Dillman's are his neighbors, so his family created a red birdhouse to add to the collection.
“We’re all cooped up, we’re tired of staying in, so it’s a nice little outlet,” said Murphy.
One community member, Joe Shaw, walks by every day and said he’d love to see more of the projects around Chico.
“I think it’s a great thing to see a neighborhood being creative and the fact that they stay there, they don’t go away…I don’t know what that says about our neighborhood, but they’ve been there…they stay there…they add a lot of beauty,” said Shaw.
Jodie Dillman wants to remind everyone that “we are all in this together.”
The couple shared that they encourage everyone to add a birdhouse. Bruce said if you do make one- don’t forget to seal it so the colors last. The Dillman's said they have more birdhouses in the making right now that they will be adding to the fence.
