UPDATE: 6:50 p.m., Friday, July 17, 2020 - A man is recovering in the hospital after police say he was hit while riding his bike in Chico.
“The injury to the bicyclist was significant and he was immediately rushed into surgery,” said Traffic Seargent Todd Lefkowitz.
The crash happened at the eastbound 9th and Broadway Streets intersection just after 5:30 a.m. and it came as no surprise to local businesses.
"It’s just… it’s the thought that this is just a rough intersection and I’m not sure what the solution is," said a manager at Chico's Natural Foods Co-op Joey Haney.
Traffic was blocked off in the area for hours and California Highway Patrol conducted its investigation.
"That’s what we are doing out here. We are collecting all of our evidence and documenting what occurred and then working backwards to figure out who is at fault and what exactly happened," said Seargent Lefkowitz.
Haney believes the city would benefit from more protected walk and cyclists lights that aren’t paired with allowing the drivers to go through, which would maybe make it a little easier and safer.
"You are always going to have the challenge of people going against the light, going in the wrong direction," said Haney.
The police say they are still investigating the cause of the crash.
