Chico, Calif.--One woman is in the hospital after being hit by a vehicle in Chico Wednesday evening.

The crash happened just after 6:30 when an SUV travelling west bound at about 35 miles per hour on West East Avenue near Harvest Park Court crashed into the bicyclist.

Chico police said the 42-year old-bicyclist admitted that she did not look both ways before crossing the street.

The driver of the SUV attempted to swerve to avoid hitting her, but it was too late.

Police said the woman was conscious after the crash and complained about abdomen pain and was taken to Enloe Medical Center.
David Heyne said this crash happened during a busy time on the roadways, and it's important for bicyclists take measures to keep themselves safe.

"Put all, put those light reflectors and uh make sure you're looking both ways and go on the crosswalks, so you're less liable that way," said officer David Heyne with the Chico Police Department.

Traffic was reduced to one lane as police worked to clear the scene, but both lanes are now back open.
