CHICO, Calif. - An art show in Chico, 'Beauty from Ashes,' is showcasing murals that popped up around Paradise after the Camp Fire.

The artist of the murals, Shane Grammer, was born and raised in Chico.

He said he never thought his art would blow up the way it did.

"I call it a miracle," he said. "There's nothing else to say."

Grammer has been involved in humanitarian work since he was 19.

"I've always had a heart to bring hope and joy to a downcast and broken area," Grammer said.

His inspiration came from a mission painting trip to an orphanage.

He said he doesn't want to build his career off of what people lost in Paradise.

"I was just out there doing what I've done for years and I was hoping that it would bring joy to a few people," Grammer said.

But Grammer brought more than just joy to the people on the ridge. Some told Grammar that his murals gave them their first glimmer of hope after the fire.

"I like to create artwork that identifies with people's pain - you know, the punches of life -but we keep going," he said.

Many of Grammer's paintings feature the face of a woman. His inspiration comes from a book in the Bible called "Song of Solomon."

"But the woman represents mankind and God returning for his beautiful creation, the one he loves," he said. "That's what I'm communicating through the image of the beautiful woman."

Grammer said his art show is an opportunity to connect with people face-to-face who have been touched deeply by his art.

The art show is a fundraiser to benefit the Paradise Art Center and the Children's Art Museum. It is taking place at the Museum of Northern California Art on Friday, June 7 from 6:30 - 10 p.m.
