Update: 4:55 p.m., Tuesday, March 17, 2020 - The Sheriff's Office said the 10-year-old boy is in stable condition.
They also gave further details confirming the two boys are brothers.
Deputies are interviewing family members to determine the owner of the gun and why it was accessible to the boys.
PALERMO, Calif. -The Butte County Sheriff's Office tells Action News Now a 10-year-old has been shot after he and a 7-year-old were playing with a handgun on March 17.
Officials say the call came in at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
The two boys were playing at a home on Messina Avenue in Palermo. Officials say the 7-year-old grabbed the handgun and shot the 10-year-old in the hip area.
The 10-year-old has been life-flighted to UC Davis.
According to the sheriff's office, this does appear to be accidental and they are currently interviewing family members.
