Chico businessman sentenced to jail for asbestos dumping

According to Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey, a Chico businessman was sentenced to 120 days in Butte County Jail for illegally dumping asbestos in 2020.

BUTTE COUNTY, Calif.- A Chico businessman was sentenced to 120 days in jail at the Butte County Superior Court today for several charges from a 2020 incident where he was caught dumping asbestos on his property in Chico. 

71-year-old Richard E. Parks pleaded guilty to felony charges of transporting hazardous materials without a permit and improper disposal of hazardous material on June 11. Additionally, he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of endangering a state waterway. 

On top of 120 days in Butte County Jail, Parks will be fined $100,000. The total for the criminal processes and cleanup will cost Parks well over $330,000, according to Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey.
