Anderson Police starts surveillance at local Walmart to prevent car thefts

Anderson Police partners with C.H.P. to prevent cars from being taken from an area where car thieves are frequently caught.

Over the past few years, the Walmart in Anderson has been a problem spot for car thieves. While there are not a lot of cars that are stolen from this shopping center, lots of thieves have been stopped here with stolen cars. As Lt., Rocky Harpham of the Anderson Police Department says “our officers have a very high success rate of catching crooks either driving to Walmart or sitting in the stolen cars at Walmart or coming out from stealing stuff at Walmart going into a stolen car.”

Now Anderson Police in partnership with C.H.P. wants to try and prevent any cars from being stolen while citizens and employees are at the Anderson Walmart. They released a Facebook statement saying “Earlier [last] week we conducted undercover operations near the Walmart parking lot, looking for anyone that appeared to be stealing cars. Call it coincidence, luck or fate but there were no vehicles reported stolen from the Anderson Walmart this week.”

They are continuing to partner with the CHP task force, and not just at Walmart but in other parts of Anderson as well. As the Lieutenant told action news now, this is really about making people feel as safe as possible in their own community.
