Butte County, Calif. -- A Gridley man convicted of looting during the Oroville Dam Spillway will serve the maximum sentence. 38-year-old John F. Beebe Jr. was described as a career criminal by District Attorney Mike Ramsey.

Beebe was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison and charged with first degree residential burglary.

Beebe has a long criminal history and the DA said he hopes to make an example out of him.

The DA identified the eight looters as Brenda Joann Wilson, Cody Allen Bowles, Jacob Edward Elderkin, John Floyd Beebe, Katon Dozon Clark, Michael Brandon Matlock, Teran Curtis Washington, and Vincent Oris Saenz.

38-year-old John F. Beebe Jr. of Gridley was given the maximum sentence of 25 years to life. He is described as a "career criminal" by District Attorney Mike Ramsey.

"If an evacuation order is sent out that they don't need to worry about these predators about. It's dangerous for them to hesitate to evacuate and dangerous for first responders for folks who are now reluctant to evacuate because they are afraid of looters," said Ramsey.

Prosecutors said while some 200,000 people were ordered to evacuate, Beebe broke into an evacuated home and took more than 2,000 worth of jewelry, electronics and clothing.

Butte County DA Mike Ramsey said he asked local judges to do the maximum sentencing in Beebe's case, all to make an example of Beebe.

"During that evacuation it's been a particularly vulnerable time for the community and we don't want these thieves to be around preying on our citizens," said Ramsey.

Beebe had more than three strikes and five or six first degree burglaries as a career criminal, the DA decided to make it clear this kind of behavior won't be tolerated.
