Massive rockslide closes Highway 70 indefinitely from Deadwood Rd. to the Greenville Wye

Rainy weather and high winds in this portion of Butte and Plumas Counties caused rock and mudslides that blocked the road.

BUTTE AND PLUMAS COUNTY, Calif. - Highway 70 will be closed indefinitely from Deadwood Rd. to the Greenville Wye, where the 89 and 70 meet, because of a massive rockslide.

The rockslide and mudslides happened in the Dixie Fire burn scar with all the run-off leading into Feather River.

Caltrans Supervisor, Matthew Martin says the burnt vegetation is not good for the fish swimming in it and says the mountains on either side of the road have large rocks and lots of vegetation.

“We have massive amounts of water coming down off of our banks. Too much for our culverts to handle, so they are going over the road. We have a massive rock slide at the Butte County Plumas County line. Big rocks as big as houses, they’re not going to be moved anytime soon. As far as the burn scar, we have massive amounts of debris, black mud plugging up the culverts, so it’s going to be closed for a while," said Martin.

Martin says the rain is a big concern right now because it loosens up the rocks and vegetation to come down the mountain.

He says there are Caltrans workers on both sides of the rockslide and says such a large portion of the highway needs to remain closed not only until the rockslide debris is cleared, but because any portion of the mountain can come down with most of the Butte County side of the rockslide having large rocks on the mountain.

The mild weather will come to an end after this weekend. But for now, we have another night of fog possible in the valley.
