A diamond dream come true for Colin Barber

CHICO, Calif. -- Pleasant Valley senior outfielder Colin Barber was in the middle of taking a final exam when he recieved the text message of a life time.

"I just went silent in my class – actually in the middle of a final – stopped my final, looked at my teacher, told her I got to go outside" Barber said.

He was drafted by the Houston Astros with the No. 136 overall pick in the 2019 MLB draft.

"[I] ran, found my coach and give him a big old hug," said Barber.

But looking back at his high school baseball journey, it hasn't always been easy.

Barber broke his leg just five games into his sophomore season.

"At that moment, obviously it was painful, – it was sad." Barber said.

Barber sat for the remainder of the season and the healing process would take two different leg casts, a walking boot and several months before he got back on the field.

The injury would be a test of his resiliency.

"I knew I would come back from that no matter what, I knew that baseball was the one thing I love – one of the biggest things I love in my life," Barber said.

Barber returned his junior year and picked up where he left off. He finished the season batting .449 with 39 RBIs and helped lead the Vikings to their first section championship since 2010.

The highly-touted senior signed his letter of intent to play at the University of Oregon back in November. Now, Barber he has to decide between college ball or the Astros.

"I'm excited for both paths, just [to] see where I go but we’ll just see what happens in the next few days," he said.

Barber said his ultimate goal is to be a major leaguer, give back to his community and help his family and friends.
