SHASTA COUNTY, Calif.--Two measures will be hitting the ballot for residents in the Redding area.
Measure A will provide funding for staff for the Shasta Lake Fire Protection District.
“It'll allow us to continue to provide the current service we have,” fire engineer for the Shasta Lake Fire Protection District Ryan Woods said. “It potentially may allow us to bring some more people on depending on how that goes.”
And Measure B is a bond which will go toward improvements for schools in the Redding School District.
“Schools are very limited on their funding, and their funding is very categorical,” former Redding School District board member Denise Yergensen said. “So certain funding comes in but it can only be spent on a certain thing. And facilities are usually the last to go, or to be done.”
Superintendent of Redding schools Robert Adams said ballot Measure B is essentially an extension of a bond measure from 1991 that's set to expire soon.
He said taxpayers won’t pay anything more than what they pay now.
In fact, they would pay slightly less.
And that money would allow the school district to make much needed improvements to buildings.
“Most of the schools in the Redding School district are very old schools,” Yergensen said. “Turtle Bay was the last one built, and it's the newest one and I'm going to guess it's 20-30 years old now.”
Measure A is a special property tax measure that would increase property taxes by about $100 per year and raise an estimated half a million dollars annually for the fire protection district.
“It's not a whole lot, but what you're getting stays right here at this district,” Woods said. “So everything is here and it will directly work for this community.”
For Woods, who's also a taxpayer, measure a is worth the less than 10 dollars a month it will cost.
“So to be able to have a couple of extra people staffing makes a world of difference to protect our community,” he said.
