CHICO, Calif. - The founder of Butte County Mental Health has retired this month at the age of 90.
Doctor Gerald Maguire opened the doors to Butte County Mental Health in Oroville in 1967. He said he did so to bring services to the North State that were not readily available before.
Butte County Mental Health changed to Butte County Behavioral Health in the 1990s. The change was made to include those with substance-use disorders.
Doctor Maguire hopes to establish a residency psychiatric program in the north state. Action News Now asked Doctor Maguire what else is next now that he is retired.
"I hope to still do some consulting work with one or another clinic, but I think more importantly I'm going to try to get my hand on this residency program, I think that's very crucial," Maguire said.
In terms of the future of psychiatry, Maguire said he hopes more effective treatments will continue to be developed.
