Siskiyou County, Calif. -

The Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office says a suspect was injured in a shootout with California Highway Patrol.

The Sheriff's Office says it happened at 7:40 a.m. Saturday on the shoulder of Interstate 5, just south of Edgewood Road and north of Weed. A CHP officer was making a routine check of a vehicle parked on the right shoulder of I-5.

The Sheriff's Office says an armed occupant of the vehicle then confronted the officer, and the officer shot the suspect. The suspect then tried to flee, but was arrested and taken in Mercy Medical Center in Mt. Shasta for treatment. He is expected to survive. His identity has not been released. The officer was not injured.

Charges against the suspect are pending at this time. The criminal investigation into the officer-involved shooting incident is being handled by a multi-agency Siskiyou County law investigation team, pursuant to an existing protocol. The criminal investigation, routine in such matters, when completed, will be reviewed by Siskiyou County District Attorney Kirk Andrus. Members of the investigative team include detectives or officers from the Yreka Police Department, Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office (Major Crimes Unit, including forensic technician), CHP, and Siskiyou County District Attorney's Office. The CHP's Northern Division Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigative Team (MAIT), CHP Northern Division, Yreka CHP, and Mt. Shasta CHP investigators are also assisting with the investigation. The SCSO's Search and Rescue team is assisting at the crime scene.

The CHP will lead the administrative officer-involved shooting investigation, which will evaluate policy and procedural issues involving the incident.

This case is still under investigation and anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the SCSO's 24-hour Dispatch Center at (530) 841-2900.
