Gridley, Calif. -- A Gridley family is trying to find closure after losing a loved one in a hit and run on Easter.

The suspect, 44-year-old Anne Marie Montez, plead not guilty in court this week. The victim's family is upset she was released from custody on her own recognizance.

"My mom was a person, she wasn't a dog she wasn't an animal or anything just to leave her there," said Maribel Gomez, the victim's daughter.

On Easter Sunday, Maria Dejesus Gomez was simply making a short walk home. That's when the Gomez family's life was turned upside down.

"They hit her and didn't even stop," said Roberto Gomez, the victim's son.

Montez allegedly hit Gomez with her SUV on Magnolia and Haskell in Gridley. Montez reportedly drove off and Gomez died the next day from her injuries.

"It felt really painful cause I won't ever get to see her again. And she won't ever get to see the kids I have," said Roberto Gomez.

Montez appeared in court on Thursday and pled not guilty to the crime.

"You need to take accountability for what you did. The one time you were able to be a good person in this life, you failed at that," said Roberto Gomez.

Montez is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on May 17. Stay in touch with our website for follow up on the preliminary hearing.
