Oroville, Calif. -- Car thefts happen every day, but thieves are getting more aggressive and apparently stooping even lower than before.

Here is the case of a young man who broke his femur and went to the hospital, and about halfway through his stay found out his truck had been stolen from the parking lot.

“It's pretty much been my baby. I customized it, made it look fancy, and it just worked perfectly for me,” said Corwin Berger.

The truck is a 2000 White Chevy that he spent thousands of dollars on to make it look exactly like he wanted.

“It was lowered, 20-inch chrome wheels, custom lights, front bumper, exhaust.”

He also had hundreds of dollars of fishing equipment in there, something that's a huge passion of his.

“Whenever I’m not working, I’m fishing. It's pretty much all I do,” he said.

It's a recent passion of his. A few years ago he went out to ride his dirt bike on his birthday “and I just had a freak little accident. Hit a bump wrong, flipped over my handlebars and broke T-12 in half; I've been paralyzed ever since.”

He and his brother own a boat, and fishing is something he and his son love doing together.

Corwin drives 45 minutes to work in Chico every day, and his truck was modified for his needs, it had hand controls, and he could easily throw the wheelchair in the passenger seat.

He recently broke his femur and ended up at Oroville Hospital for a week, leaving his truck in a handicap space in front of the emergency room.

“I even asked the nurses and doctors like ‘is my truck going to be fine?’ I've been in here for a couple of days. They said don't worry about it.”

Four days later, he realized someone stole it, and he said people have told him they've seen it around Oroville.

He and his dad are trying to fix up and modify another car until he can either afford to buy his own or find his truck, but he said it's been a tough transition.

“How much I have to replace and how much it's going to take away from my livelihood right now, me going to work, picking up my son from school, everything.”

The family has set up a GoFundMe account to help raise money for a new truck; click here  if you would like to donate.
