Earthquake near Smith Valley, Nev. shakes Northern California

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake hit Smith Valley, Nev. and several aftershocks shook Northern California at about 3:50 p.m. Thursday.

SMITH VALLEY, Nev. - A 5.9 magnitude earthquake hit Smith Valley, Nev. at about 3:49 p.m. Thursday afternoon, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

A 3.8 magnitude aftershock hit Walker, Calif. at about 3:57 p.m. followed by a 3.1 magnitude in Coleville, Calif., the USGS website said. 

Several aftershocks continue in the area of Walker.

The shaking from the earthquakes could be felt in Butte County.
