REDDING, Calif. - A man and woman attempted to run away from police after officers spotted them in a stolen vehicle at the Redding Walmart parking lot, said the Redding Police Department.
According to Redding police, officers performed a traffic stop Saturday after 10 p.m. on a green 1995 Geo Prism at 1515 Dana Dr.
But when officers checked on the license plate of the car, it was reported stolen, officials said.
Police say the two occupants of the vehicle, Michael Steele, 24, and Christy Vogiatzis, 29, both of Redding, at first complied with officers’ commands.
But then Steele, the driver, sped off through the parking lot and pulled to the rear of Ashley’s Furniture, officials said.
Then the suspects left the vehicle and ran in opposite directions, but Vogiatzis was quickly detained by nearby officers.
Steele apparently ran across Highway 44 and officers caught him near Cedarwood and Woodside Meadows drives.
Police say Steele was arrested for a parole violation warrant, evading an officer, possession of the stolen car, and resisting and delaying officers. Vogiatzis had felony arrest warrants for possessing a stolen car, and she was also arrested for resisting and delaying officers.
