A new grant for almost a 1/2 million dollars will increase the amount of food available for hungry people in Butte County. and will reduce how much food waste goes into the landfill.
The Jesus Center in Chico partnered with 25 other county agencies to qualify for the grant. With the new funds from Cal Recycle, they will be able to add staff, software, vehicles and kitchen appliances to increase food storage at their own shelter.
Another partner, the North State Food Bank will be able to rescue more food from grocery stores, restaurants and schools to give away or to use as compost at the Jesus Center Farm.
A vocational program will also be created at the center to train people in food preparation.
