A drive-by shooting at a bus stop in Louisville, Kentucky, on Wednesday left one teen dead and two other children injured, police said in a series of tweets.

The shooting occurred around 6:30 a.m. at Dr. W.J. Hodge and Chestnut streets, as children waited for the bus, the Louisville Metro Police Department said.

A teen boy was shot and transported to University of Louisville Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said. Mayor Greg Fischer said the victim was 16 years old.

The boy was identified as Tyree Smith, according to a tweet from the Louisville Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).

"A school bus stop," said Fischer. "Which should be a sacred space in our community, a safe space where there should be every expectation of safety and security."

A second male teen was taken to Kosair Children's Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, police said in the tweets. A juvenile female was treated for minor injuries at the scene, police said. They are both 14 years old.

Anyone with information was urged to call police or the FBI.

No arrests have been made. Police said they were looking for a gray Jeep with a Illinois license plate BD91644. "We need to talk to any occupants who may have information on this," the department said in a tweet.

"We're truly grateful for those citizens who approached us, volunteered information" and security footage, said LMPD Chief Erika Shields during a news briefing.

All of the students involved went to Eastern High School, said Jefferson County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Marty Pollio.

The FBI office in the city tweeted: "Our hearts break this morning with the news of the senseless violence targeting children waiting for a school bus. This is unacceptable."
