CHICO, Calif. -- According to Butte County health officials, the Measles were eradicated in 2000. There are two confirmed cases of measles in Chico and one case in Shasta County. With the recent cases, we recently spoke with a doctor on whether vaccine hesitancy is is to blame with the Measles outbreak. Both of the infected individuals in Chico are unvaccinated adults.

"People for years were suggesting that the measles mumps and rubella vaccine could cause autism" said Dr. Andrew Miller of Butte County Health Department.

He goes on to say, "In many large studies, hundreds of thousands of children followed over time, both those who have been immunized and those who haven't, to look to see if those who have been immunized to see if they have a higher incidence or rate of autism and they do not."

Miller said that the measles virus is the perfect virus for vaccination.

"It doesn't mutate like HIV does. It doesn't have multiple strains like flu does. Like Polio and Small Pox, we have a great great opportunity to take this off the face of the earth,'' Miller said.

The Butte County Public Health Department is investigating both patients to find out where they’ve been and who they’ve been in contact with. Neither of the adults is contagious anymore.

The Esplanade House at 181 E. Shasta Ave. in Chico has been identified as a possible location for public exposure during the period from March 15 through March 19, 2019.

Individuals concerned about exposure can call (530) 353-5564 to speak with Public Health officials on Sunday, March 24 until 5 p.m. and next Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
