SUGAR FIRE: Forest Service combined Sugar and Dotta Fires into Beckwourth Complex

The Sugar Fire burned across Highway 70 in Sierra Valley but the highway has reopened. Evacuation warnings have been issued by the Plumas County Sheriff.

Update 2:23 p.m. Sunday, July 4, 2021 - The Dotta Fire and the Sugar Fire have been combined for firefighting management. The two fires are now referred to as the Beckwourth Complex.

The combined fires have burned 1,141 acres and are 24% contained.

On July 4th at 6:00 a.m. California Interagency Incident Management Team 4, led by Incident Commander Rocky Opliger, took over command and control of the two fires making up the Beckwourth Complex.

An Incident Command Post and basecamp has been set up at the C. Roy Carmichael Elementary School in Portola, Calif.

Here is the first community update from officials working on the Beckwourth Complex since the two fires were combined into one firefighting unit:


Update 11:00 p.m. Saturday, July 3, 2021 - The Sugar Fire is currently 470 acres and is 25% contained.

More resources are on order and should be arriving on Saturday night.

Structure protection is a priority for fire crews, who have been successful to this point and no structures have been lost.

On Saturday night crews will try to put in direct line and take advantage of cooler temperatures and higher humidities from cloud cover.


SIERRA VALLEY, Calif. - The Sugar Fire started on Friday, July 2, 2021, just west of Sugarloaf Peak on the Beckwourth District of the Plumas National Forest.

The Plumas County Sheriff's Office has issued an evacuation advisory for the Sugar Fire east of Maddelena Road and Sugarloaf Mountain to Goodwin Ranch.

The Sugar Fire is 300 acres in size as of Saturday morning, burning in grass, brush, and timber.

According to the Plumas National Forest, several homes were evacuated during the initial attack by the Plumas County Sheriff's Office.

Resources to fight the Sugar Fire have been diverted from the Dotta Fire to assist. 

The fire burned across Highway 70 in Sierra Valley and caused a temporary closure of the road.

Structures remain threatened, says officials with the Plumas National Forest.

Hwy 70 is open.

There is a Red Flag Warning for dry lightning and gusty winds in the fire area from Saturday night at 11:00 p.m. to Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
