CHICO, Calif. - Steven Hille, the owner of the UPS store in Paradise is at Barnes & Noble in Chico this afternoon, trying to deliver some of his boxholders' mail.

Hille has set up his white BMW in the parking lot, and is meeting with the customers he can find. He says he can not reach most of the box holders by phone, and several have left the area.

The UPS franchise owner says he has not been able to go back to his store, which appears to be undamaged, to pick up packages that are still sitting on the floor of the business. He said he needs to retrieve mail, packages, business records, stamps and other materials, but has not been allowed back in to Paradise to get those items.

He says he is required to deliver mail within ten days, according to his franchise contract, or the mail has to be returned to senders.

Hille said he has been given 20 bins of mail from the United States Postal Service, that has to be sorted and somehow, delivered.

Hille lost his home, and is staying with his mother. He says he can not set up a commercial mail sorting operation in her home, and has no where to work.

The owner said he may have to have his licensed pulled since he cannot meet the agreements in the contract because of the Camp Fire. He said if he files a change of address, everyone who has a box at his UPS store would have their mail forwarded to his new address. He would not be able to retrieve his mail, and leave other boxholders' mail at the post office.

Hille would like to work with someone from the county or from a disaster relief organization to help him and his customers get their mail, before he has to send it all back.

Steven Hille can be reached at (530) 712-8055. His UPS store in Paradise is located at 6616-D Clark Rd. next to Subway.
