It’s been a long 24 hours for fire crews working the Stoney fire.

At one point, the fire line came extremely close to homes, prompting 50 households to be evacuated.

Incredibly, thanks to the fast efforts of fire crews, no homes were destroyed and residents are back home.

The Stoney fire first broke out around 10:30 Thursday night. Residents of Canyon Oaks awoke Friday morning to a shocking surprise - an inferno of smoke and flames, burning in their backyards. This prompted evacuations, and the closure of Highway 32.

The scene changed dramatically throughout the day as fire crews worked tirelessly to beat back the flames. By noon time, the California Highway Patrol reopened Highway 32, and residents were finally able to return to assess the damage - only to be surprised to find their homes safe.

Two firefighters sustained minor injuries. No one died in the fire.

Fire crews are continuing their work tonight to contain the fire. In the meantime, the residents say, they are grateful.

As of Friday night, fire officials tell us the flames are 40% contained. Cal Fire also would like to remind everyone that we are in the middle of fire season, so it's best to be prepared.

Today was hot and tomorrow will be as well. But slightly below average temperatures move in as we see a dip in the jet stream.
