MILLVILLE, Calif. - Action News Now is tracking the Cow Fire burning near Milville. So far, the fire scorched about 761 acres and is 50% contained.

The fire broke out near South Cow Creek Road and Highway 44. The fire burned right next to the highway and close to homes nearby.

On Sunday afternoon the fire exploded, growing to 600 acres by Monday and threatened several homes on South Cow Creek Road and Highway 44.

“We're seeing our vegetation, typically what we would see a couple of months out from now,” said Cheryl Bulviavac, the public information officer for the CAL FIRE’s Shasta-Trinity Unity. “So, the fire behavior is not typical for June.”

Bud Duffy had just gotten home when the fire started.

“A fire truck had just pulled up and my property was on fire; it was burning all around,” said Duffy. “So we just stopped and go out of the car, grabbed some hoses, started putting the fire out along our borderline.”

Duffy said the quick response from fire crews and the defensible space around his home helped protect his property.

“It was pretty hectic but they were on it,” said Duffy. “They did a good job and they had the crew from the jail come out.”

CAL FIRE crews are focusing on mopping up and increasing containment lines but keeping an eye out for a re-ignition.

“We had a lot of resources out here very quickly and that really made a lot of difference,” said Buliavac. “You can see the fire burned very close to this home. This home had defensible space which was an advantage to them.”

CAL FIRE said the cooler temperatures overnight helped decreased the fire activity.

Thankfully, the wind is cooperating much better today in northern California. Our weather is still quite hot for this time of year and very dry. There is plenty of haze and smoke from the Fawn Fire overhead, and it isn't leaving yet.
