Our Future After the Fire: Manufactured homes may help building costs

Developer in Paradise believes manufactured homes may be a more economical option for the town.

PARADISE, Calif. - Town Council Member Michael Zuccolillo told Action News Now that part of what made Paradise so special was its variety of homes.

"For some reason now a lot of people are concerned the same harmony will return but that's what was here before, it was a true blended mix," Zuccolillo said.

Many fear now that they can't afford to rebuild in Paradise. Developer Luigi Balsamo said they're not wrong.

"You had places that were built quite a few years ago and it would be near impossible to create what you had here without making it substantially more expensive to move back here," Balsamo said. "It would make it what that does is drives people that used to live here out of the area."

Balsamo said a home built in 1990 that cost around $158,000, today could sell for about $340,000.

"The cost of rebuilding is a lot more expensive now and so that by default is going to narrow who can move back to the area and who can afford who can afford to live here," Balsamo said.

Balsamo and his team of investors are buying up properties from people moving out of the area. Their goal is to build prefab modular or manufactured homes.

"We feel like this will be a more affordable, quicker solution for affordable housing in the area," Balsamo said.

Others may ask how would these manufactured homes fit into a new Paradise?

Zuccolillo thinks the homes would fit in just fine.

"I think these fears that it's gonna turn into a trailer town, it's gonna turn into a ghost town," Zuccolillo said. "I think it's just a lot of people's raw emotions."

Today was hot and tomorrow will be as well. But slightly below average temperatures move in as we see a dip in the jet stream.
