History of the Action News Now stations
KHSL TV 12
KHSL TV 12 signed on Aug. 26, 1953 under ownership of the Golden Empire Broadcasting Company, which was led by Ruth "Mickey" McClung, one of the first women in the country to own a television station. The station remains the longest TV station in Northern California.
From the beginning as a local CBS affiliate, KHSL TV 12 has evolved, under shared services agreements, as a major television operation in Northern California. Under its one roof at its Silverbell Road location in Chico, KHSL TV 12 is also headquarters to NBC affiliate KNVN TV 24, as well as local CW and Telemundo affiliates.
Its transmitter is located in Cohasset, California. The station is now owned by California TV LLC, part of the Allen Media Broadcasting Group.
KNVN TV 24
KNVN TV 24 first hit the airwaves on September 24, 1985 as KCPM, making the northern Sacramento Valley one of the last regions of the country with full network service. It also brought a full NBC affiliate to the area for the first time since 1978.
In 1998, KCPM would change its call letters to KNVN with a new slogan, "KNVN Means North Valley News." Two years later, the station would be sold and its operations would be moved from its downtown Chico location on 4th Street to the Silverbell Road home of CBS affiliate KHSL TV, operating under a shared services agreement with KHSL TV.
KNVN TV 24 is now owned by Maxair Media LLC, which also operates the local Telemundo affiliate.
