Recap: Seattle vs. Arizona
Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Seattle Seahawks' 14-game home winning streak was snapped by the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.
Michael Floyd's 31-yard touchdown catch with 2:13 remaining gave the Cardinals a 17-10 victory over the Seahawks, who lost at home for the first time since Dec. 24, 2011.
Seattle came into Sunday's game needing a win or tie to clinch the NFC West and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. Despite the loss, the Seahawks (12-3) can still accomplish the aforementioned if the 49ers lose or tie against the Atlanta Falcons on Monday night.
"We saw a tremendous defensive football game today. It was a slugfest they won out," Seattle coach Pete Carroll said. "We had trouble in all phases today. We had some stuff after the whistle. We could not find the hookups we normally get. This goes into next week."
Jay Feely kicked three field goals for the Cardinals (10-5), who kept their playoff hopes alive. Arizona and New Orleans have the same record, but the Saints hold the final wild-card spot based on head-to-head win percentage.
Carson Palmer completed 13-of-25 passes for 178 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions for Arizona, which has won three in a row.
"This win defies the odds. We had four turnovers and still won," Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said. "Fantastic venue, great fans and that's why we play the game."
Russell Wilson connected on 11-of-27 passes for 108 yards, one touchdown and an interception for the Seahawks. Wilson lost at CenturyLink Field for the first time in his NFL career.
The Cardinals trailed 10-9 following Zach Miller's 11-yard TD catch with 7:26 to play.
Arizona responded with a 10-play, 80-yard scoring drive that was kept alive early on by Jake Ballard's 17-yard catch on third down. Seattle's Malcolm Smith was called for holding on the next third down, giving the visitors a fresh set of downs. On 3rd-and-6 from the 31, Floyd made a nice juggling catch in the end zone. Rashard Mendenhall caught the conversion pass to make it 17-10.
Wilson was picked off by Karlos Dansby on the first play of the ensuing Seattle possession. The ball hit off the arm of a diving Doug Baldwin and bounced into the hands of Dansby, sealing the victory for Arizona.
Brittan Golden caught a 63-yard pass on the third play of the game, moving the Arizona into the red zone. On 3rd-and-2 from the Seattle 5-yard line, Palmer was picked off by Kam Chancellor.
The Seahawks got one first down before punting.
Arizona was driving again late in the first quarter when Palmer was intercepted by Richard Sherman. Seattle then went on a 13-play, 70-yard drive that featured third-down catches by Jermaine Kearse and Ricardo Lockette. The home team moved the ball to the Arizona 4-yard line, but a delay-of-game penalty set up 3rd-and-8. Wilson's incomplete pass led to Steven Hauschka's 27-yard field goal early in the second.
The Cardinals almost scored a touchdown with less than five minutes remaining. Floyd was called for offensive pass interference on what would have been a 32- yard score. The visitors had to settle for a 39-yard field goal from Feely.
Palmer threw his third interception of the first half on Arizona's next possession. Chris Clemons tipped the ball at the line of scrimmage and Smith came down with the pick for the Seahawks.
The home team started from the Arizona 3-yard line following Smith's 32-yard interception return, but came away with zero points as Hauschka missed a 24- yard attempt.
The third quarter started with seven straight punts. The Cardinals ended up on their own 45-yard line with 3:30 remaining and capitalized on a 46-yard field goal from Feely, making it 6-3 Arizona.
The Cardinals had a chance to extend their lead after Robert Turbin fumbled on the ensuing kickoff. Just three plays later, Palmer was picked off by Sherman in the end zone.
After the Seahawks went three-and-out, the Cardinals tacked on three more points. Consecutive penalties on Seattle moved the ball to the 16-yard line. The Cardinals, however, settled for another field goal when Feely made a 26- yarder with 10:39 left in the fourth.
Seattle's first touchdown of the game gave them the lead. Golden Tate fumbled after a 28-yard catch but Kearse recovered for the Seahawks. Kearse added a 13-yard catch before Miller scored to give the home team a 10-9 edge.Game Notes
