Recap: Minnesota vs. Chicago Cubs

Minneapolis, MN (Sports Network) - Snakebitten for nearly 10 months, Ryan Dempster won his second game this week on the heels of an 18-start winless streak.

The Canadian-born hurler tossed eight shutout innings as the Chicago Cubs downed the Minnesota Twins, 8-2, in the finale of a three-game interleague series.

Dempster (2-3) fanned six, scattered four hits and walked one for the Cubs, who had lost four in a row and eight of their last nine coming in. Dempster has not allowed a run in 15 innings and lowered his ERA to 2.31 on the year.

"He throws the ball where he wants to, he's a veteran guy who's been around," Minnesota third baseman Trevor Plouffe said of Dempster's day. "He had his stuff working again and when he has that, he's going to be tough."

Dempster has surrendered two runs or fewer in eight of his 11 outings this season.

David DeJesus, Alfonso Soriano, Jeff Baker, Joe Mather and Darwin Barney recorded an RBI apiece while Reed Johnson and Starlin Castro each registered two hits and a pair of runs scored.

Francisco Liriano (1-7) was touched for four runs on four hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings for the Twins, who had won six of their last seven entering the contest.

The Cubs scored three or fewer runs with Dempster on the mound in 16 of his starts during the winless streak and Chicago plated just a run in the opening frame on Soriano's RBI double before exploding for three in the sixth.

"We were able to put some runs on the board and then some more runs and avoid a sweep," Dempster said.

With men on second and third with none out, DeJesus rolled an RBI groundout to second. Liriano intentionally walked Soriano to load the bases and during Baker's at-bat, Castro raced home on a wild pitch.

After Baker struck out, Mather pulled a double down the third-base line, scoring Soriano as the Cubs took a 4-0 lead.

Chicago padded its lead with two runs in each of the eighth and ninth frames.

Baker lifted a sacrifice fly and Barney smacked an RBI single to center in the eighth, while DeJesus ripped a two-run double into the right-field corner in the ninth for an 8-0 Cubs lead.

The Twins plated two in the ninth on Ryan Doumit's sacrifice fly and Jamey Carroll's RBI double.

Game Notes

Prior to his last two outings, Dempster's last victory was on August 11 of last season against the Washington Nationals...Castro stole his 16th base this year...Minnesota was 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base while Chicago was 3-for-11 with RISP and stranded five.
