Recap: North Texas vs. Rice

Denton, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Antoinne Jimmerson ran for a touchdown and caught another to help North Texas down Rice 28-16 on Thursday night.

Jimmerson finished with eight carries for 62 yards and one reception -- a 46- yard touchdown.

Derek Thompson completed 7-of-13 passes for 104 yards, one touchdown and one interception and Brelan Chancellor returned a punt for a score for the Mean Green (6-3, 4-1 C-USA), winners in four straight.

With the win, North Texas became bowl eligible for the first time since 2004 when it finished 7-5 and lost to Southern Mississippi in the New Orleans Bowl.

Taylor McHargue was 18-for-28 passing for 222 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, while Jordan Taylor and Turner Petersen finished with one receiving score apiece for the Owls (6-3, 4-1), who dropped a conference game for the first time since falling to Tulsa on Oct. 20, 2012.

Charles Ross rushed for 101 yards on 18 carries in the setback.

North Texas fell behind 16-7 in the second quarter, but scored a pair of touchdowns before halftime to go into the break with a 21-16 lead.

With just over five minutes left, Jimmerson broke off a 42-yard touchdown run to pull the Mean Green within 16-14.

After forcing a three-and-out on the ensuing possession, Chancellor returned James Farrimond's punt 65 yards for the go-ahead score.

North Texas added to its lead in the third as Thompson connected with Jimmerson for a 46-yard touchdown.

The Owls were driving late in the fourth quarter, but McHargue's pass on 2nd- and-12 from the North Texas 26 was intercepted by Marcus Trice, sealing the win for the Mean Green.

Rice got on the board with a safety with just 1:17 left in the first, but Ross fumbled on the second play of the ensuing drive and North Texas' Zach Orr returned it 55 yards for a touchdown to go up 7-2.

The Owls then scored a pair of touchdowns early in the second to take a 16-7 lead.

First, McHargue completed a 21-yard touchdown pass to Petersen to cap a 5-play, 75 yard jaunt just 54 seconds into the frame.

McHargue connected with Taylor for a 32-yard touchdown strike nearly five minutes later for a nine-point edge.
