Recap: Niagara vs. Brown

Niagara, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Antoine Mason poured in 39 points and recorded six steals to propel the Niagara Purple Eagles to a 68-65 win over the Brown Bears in a non-conference thriller at the Gallagher Center.

Tahjere McCall added 12 points for the Purple Eagles (4-9) as they improved to 3-2 at home with the victory in their final non-league game of the regular season.

The Bears (6-5) suffered their second setback in a row despite a strong showing from Sean McGonagill, who finished with 19 points and seven rebounds. Steven Spieth chipped in 11 points while Rafael Maia registered a double- double with 10 points and the same number of rebounds.

Both sides struggled offensively in the opening period. Brown shot just 35.5 percent from the floor while the Purple Eagles connected on only 38.2 percent of their field goal tries. Niagara converted 10-of-12 attempts at the free- throw line before the break to build a 39-27 lead by halftime.

The Bears stormed back and narrowed the deficit to just three points late in the second stanza, but they trailed for the entire period. Niagara went just 1-of-7 from beyond the arc after halftime, but led by five points before McGonagill made a jumper as time expired to make it a one-possession game.

Niagara converted Brown's 25 turnovers into 21 points in the contest and led by as many as 17 points in the second half.
