Recap: Providence vs. Yale

Providence, RI (SportsNetwork.com) - Bryce Cotton scored 21 points and dished out eight assists to lead the Providence Friars to a narrow 76-74 victory over the Yale Bulldogs in a non-conference bout at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.

Tyler Harris added 19 points for the Friars (9-2). LaDontae Henton scored 13 points and Kadeem Batts tallied 10 for Providence, which has won all six of its home games to start the season.

The Bulldogs fell to 5-5, but had to be encouraged by the efficient play of Justin Sears, who scored a career-high 31 points on 13-of-16 shooting from the field. Greg Kelley came off the bench to net 11.

In the first half, Providence jumped out to a 17-5 lead, but Yale went on an 18-3 run over the final 5:17 to knot the score at 35-35 heading into intermission. The Friars outshot the Bulldogs in the opening stanza, 53.8 percent to 44.1 percent, but Yale's 17-8 rebounding advantage helped keep the game close.

The game remained tight after the break, with the Friars holding a 73-67 edge with 2:10 seconds remaining after a pair of free-throws by Henton. But a 3- point shot by Armani Cotton and a layup by Javier Duren made it a one-point game. Henton converted a layup on the next possession and a turnover with five seconds left by the Bulldogs pretty much sealed the deal.

Providence converted 92.3 percent of its free throws, while the Bulldogs hit just 57.1 percent.
