Recap: Georgetown vs. DePaul
Washington, D.C. (SportsNetwork.com) - Markel Starks scored a game-high 21 points as the Georgetown Hoyas posted a 61-54 win over the DePaul Blue Demons in the Big East Conference opener at Verizon Center.
Also scoring in double figures for the Hoyas (9-3, 1-0 Big East) was D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera with 12 points, while clearing a team-best eight rebounds. The victory was the second straight and the eighth in the last nine outings for Georgetown.
Billy Garrett posted 17 points and handed out three of DePaul's (8-6, 0-1) eight assists, while Brandon Young pitched in with 13 points and five rebounds, but shot only 4-of-13 from the floor as the team lost for the second time in the last three games.
DePaul, which led by as many as eight points in the first half, shot only 8- of-26 (.286) from the floor in the frame and ended up trailing at the break, 29-25.
In the second half the Blue Demons still had a tough time finding the basket with just 34.5 percent accuracy from the field, while Georgetown was connecting on an even 50 percent in order to take the seven-point home win.
Georgetown, which turned the ball over 16 times and shot only 15-of-27 at the free-throw line, entered the meeting having won 12 in a row overall in the series and seven straight at home.Game Notes
