Recap: Miami-Florida vs. Ga Southern
Coral Gables, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Manu Lecomte knocked down a pair of free-throws with nine seconds remaining in the extra session to give the Miami-Florida Hurricanes a 81-80 overtime victory over the Georgia Southern Eagles, in a non-conference matchup at BankUnited Center.
For the Hurricanes (1-1), Donovan Kirk led the way with 18 points and 10 rebounds while Rion Brown added 15 points. Lecomte finished with 12 points, Garrius Adams scored 11 points and James Kelly chipped in 10 points.
Jelani Hewitt led all scorers with 27 points for the Eagles (1-1), who also received 20 points courtesy of Tre Bussey. Brian Holmes contributed 17 points and Marvin Baynham grabbed a team-high six rebounds in the heartbreaking setback.
Despite shooting just 29.6 percent from the field in the first half, Miami took a 35-32 lead into the break by knocking down 16-of-18 free-throws in the period. Georgia Southern made 41.7 percent of its shots from the field and did not miss from the charity stripe, however it fell behind after only attempting seven free-throws before the break.
The Hurricanes improved to hit on 40.6 percent of their field goal attempts in the second stanza. The Eagles improved as well, connecting on 48.1 percent of their shots from the floor including 4-of-12 from beyond the arc. Georgia Southern trailed by as many as 10 points midway through the second half and faced a 60-52 deficit with just under seven minutes to play. The Eagles then reeled off thirteen unanswered points to take a 65-60 lead with 2:46 left in regulation. The Hurricanes answered with a 7-0 run to regain control before Hewitt knocked down two free-throws with six seconds showing on the game clock to force overtime.
In the extra session, Miami jumped out to the early lead but Georgia Southern answered and held an 80-79 lead with 32 seconds left in overtime. Lecomte's two made free-throws put the Hurricanes back on top and they clinched the victory after Hewitt missed a 3-point try at the buzzer.
Miami finished the night with a 25-16 scoring advantage at the free-throw line, though Georgia Southern was a perfect 16-of-16 from the charity stripe. The Hurricanes also topped the Eagles in second chance points, 20-6.Game Notes
