Working against a budget deadline

WASHINGTON (AP) - Government funding expires tonight at midnight, when the last short-term spending bill runs out.

The Senate agreed by voice vote and without debate yesterday to extend that deadline through Wednesday Dec. 16 to allow more time for talks.

The House is expected to follow suit today, but House Speak Paul Ryan says even more time might be needed. Republicans and Democrats have been unable to resolve dozens of issues, including protecting President Barack Obama's environmental rules and lifting the oil export ban.
