TRUCKEE, Calif. (AP) - After years of planning, construction on a 10.4-mile trail from Truckee to Lake Tahoe begins this week.
Organizers say initial work will focus on a half-mile section of the Martis Valley Trail from Truckee to a point above Highway 267 near Martis Valley.
The 10-foot-wide paved bicycle trail linking Truckee, Martis Valley, Northstar and Kings Beach will be built in sections, and future construction will hinge on the availability of funding.
Work on the second of six segments is expected to start in spring 2015. It will extend the trail to the Martis Valley Viewing Area for a total of 1.7 miles.
The Northstar Community Services District is the lead agency for the project, estimated to cost $17 million.
Truckee's Sierra Sun reports $4.5 million in funding has been identified so far.
