Woman sliced by propeller during Shasta Lake boating accident

A Rocklin woman was airlifted to Mercy Medical Center after both her legs were badly sliced by a houseboat propeller on Shasta Lake Saturday afternoon.

Jenny Smotherman, 40, was injured just after 6 p.m., while one of her family members was trying to beach a rented houseboat.

The boat operator attempted to drive the boat's front pontoons on shore with a bass boat and ski boat in tow.

The two towed boats started moving toward the stern of the houseboat and in an effort to prevent a collision, Smotherman jumped in the water. The houseboats propeller was still in gear and caused Smotherman to be pulled towards it. She received deep gashes to both legs.

Smotherman was airlifted to Mercy Medical Center where she underwent surgery Saturday night.

The Shasta County sheriff's office says it does not appear drugs or alcohol were a factor in this accident.
