Shasta County authorities say the area of Wintu Way in East Redding is free from fire danger after they burned a trailer believed to contain explosive materials Thursday morning.

The plan to incinerate the trailer at 19529 Wintu Way was announced Wednesday evening and executed around 10:30 a.m. Thursday. The owner of the property, Joseph Hicks, gave authorities his permission to destroy the trailer.

Sheriff's deputies have been at Hicks' property since Saturday when a woman found several containers of unknown chemicals and powders in an outdoor storage shed.

The sheriff's office says Hicks is suspected of manufacturing homemade explosives. Investigators are looking into his background, but say there is no indication that he is a member of any subversive terrorist or extremist group.

Shasta County Bomb Squad personnel, along with representatives from Shasta County Environmental Health and Shasta County Hazardous Materials Response Team are still processing the remnants of the trailer, but the road is open to all traffic and the mandatory evacuation advisement has been lifted.
