Firefighters from Butte and Sutter counties were busy battling a structure fire in Gridley overnight.

Officials got reports of the fire at 2:22 a.m. Thursday on the 1100 block of Lewis Oak Road. When firefighters arrived on scene, they found an unoccupied house fully engulfed in flames.

Firefighters say strong north winds caused the blaze to spread to a nearby home and some trees. Residents inside that home were safely evacuated, but the fire did cause major damage to the garage.

Officials say 50 percent of the abandoned home was destroyed, with the remainder of the home suffering smoke and water damage.

Fire crews were able to contain the blaze before it spread to other nearby homes and an agricultural building.

Power lines were also reported to be down in the area.

There were no injuries, and crews are expected to be there for several more hours mopping up. Damage is estimated to be around $200,000.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
