CORONA, Calif. (AP) - A wildfire that broke out near the Prado Dam north of the city of Corona has triggered the evacuation of about 300 homes.
CalFire Capt. Mike Mohler says the fire, which began in a forested basin near the dam Saturday evening, quickly grew to at least 175 acres.
He says the fire is burning thick and dry vegetation in a riverbed that hasn't burnt in years. Firefighters on the ground are hampered by the rough terrain.
Mohler says the fire is about a half-mile from a residential area on the border of Norco and Corona. A mandatory evacuation has been ordered for about 300 homes in the area.
The fire, visible from State Routes 71 and 91, sent a large plume of smoke that could be seen miles away.
