Wildcats anxiously await NCAA tournament fate

Two weeks ago, the Chico State men's basketball team was virtually a lock to make its fifth straight NCAA Div-II tournament.

Not so fast. A recent slip up has perhaps left them on the bubble as we await the Selection Show Saturday night.

The Wildcats lost back-to-back games to Cal State LA, one of which knocked them out of the CCAA Conference Championship tournament.

But the release of the latest Div-II Regional rankings had the Wildcats ranked number two in the West. A good sign when you consider that eight teams spanning three conferences from the West will make it into the Regional.

Three squads have already received automatic bids, Humboldt State, Western Oregon and Cal Baptist. Those are your CCAA, GNAC, and PacWest Conference Championship tournament winners respectively.

That leaves five at-large bids to be selected by the committee

Chico State certainly has a good resume, despite the late season struggles. They possess a 22-6 overall record and a CCAA regular season conference title.

Still, there's no doubt the team will be biting the fingernails tonight at Madison Bear Garden as they watch the tournament field unfold on the Selection Show which tips off at 7:30 p.m.

"It's crazy you know, just not knowing if we have another chance to play and get another opportunity. It's really stressful but we are feeling good about it and being optimistic so I hope we get in and we get another chance," said Cory Silverstrom, Wildcats guard.

"The record we've had, winning the league outright, the opponents we've defeated, the competition we've played, and the schedule we've played, I really feel like if we haven't done enough to show the committee that we deserve to get in, I don't know what else we could've done barring winning a couple more at the end. So we're confident and hoping things work and we get another chance to play this week," said Greg Clink, head coach.
