LOS ANGELES (AP) - A grand jury has indicted the wife of a suburban Los Angeles mayor on a charge of voluntary manslaughter in his shooting death last year.

The district attorney's office says 43-year-old Lyvette Crespo pleaded not guilty Thursday during an arraignment where the indictment was unsealed.

Bell Gardens Mayor Daniel Crespo was fatally shot at his home on Sept. 30, 2014. Prosecutors say the 45-year-old was shot three times in the right side of his chest.

Authorities have said that Lyvette Crespo claimed she fired in self-defense after her husband got into a physical altercation with their 19-year-old son.

An autopsy report contained a daughter's allegations that her father was verbally and physically abusive toward her mother for years.

Bell Gardens is a city of about 42,000 residents.
